CONTEST RESULTS
Time sure does fly by when you're having fun! It seemed like we'd just piled out of the Twin Otter plane with all of our gear bags in tow, but all good things must come to an end until next time…
Judges for this years contest included Berkley White, Dan Baldocchi, Erin Quigley, Mary Lynn Price, Joel Penner and Craig Rowland from Reef Divers. The judging room can be a tough environment, as it is subjective with each judge vying for their favorites. Rest assured, no broken bones resulted from the judging, and the top images from the week were duly recognized with the main criteria, "Would I hang this image on my wall?" and "Would I share this video with my friends?" Our share-the-wealth policy allows winners of multiple categories to take home their one favorite prize, with the other prizes going into the raffle. This year's raffle included a strobe, video lights, camera housing and even a $1000 gift certificate! Those are some sweet raffle prizes!
WINNER - JIM WATT AWARD
Jim Watt was more than a friend to the Shootout. He was a living example of our mission statement. Jim was one of the first professional underwater photographers to adopt digital photography and was thrilled to share all his shooting secrets with first time shooters or fellow professional photographers. His passion and skill in creating new images was infectious and inspired hundreds of Digital Shootout guests over the years. Our Best of Show image is honored with the Jim Watt Award of excellence. Our Friendly Competition
It really is friendly, and we really don't mention it until the event is at least halfway over! Our week-ending photo and video competition recognizes outstanding imaging in a 3 minute or less video and five photo categories: point and shoot, macro unrestricted, macro traditional, wide angle unrestricted and wide angle traditional.
UNDERWATER STORY TELLING WITH VIDEO
With more and more cameras on the market each year capable of shooting both stills and video, it is not surprising that underwater videography keeps getting more popular. This year's video entrants used a variety of cameras to record their story telling from GoPro and other compacts, to mirrorless cameras to DSLRs. Some of the videos entered were the very first video productions by those attendees! All video entrants deserve mad props for their efforts, as video production from beginning to end is a whole lot of work!
