The Canon EOS R7 is a strong contender for underwater photographers seeking a high-resolution APS-C camera with excellent video capabilities. Its 32.5-megapixel sensor delivers detailed images, while 4K 60P video allows for smooth slow-motion capture. At $1,499, it competes directly with the Sony a6700.

The R7 produces high-quality photos and maintains Canon’s well-regarded color science in video. Underwater autofocus tracking is excellent but may not be as consistent in all situations compared to some Sony, OM System, or Nikon cameras.

The Nauticam housing with an expanded viewfinder is recommended for improved visibility underwater. While the R7’s built-in EVF is decent, one with better dynamic range will make composing shots much easier, especially sun-balls.

For photographers who prefer Canon’s ergonomics and image quality, the Canon EOS R7 is an excellent choice for underwater photography at a competitive price point. It offers great still and video capabilities, and the ability to use Canon’s RF lenses with an adapter opens up a wider selection of options, such as the 8-15mm fisheye.
