GEAR TESTS: CANON 5DSR

It's not often that a new camera gets me very excited, but this past week I had the opportunity to shoot Canon's amazing high resolution 5DSR in Aquatica's 5D3/SR housing with my favorite two Canon lenses, the 8-15 f/4L fisheye zoom and the Canon 100 f/2.8L IS macro lens.

As soon as I shot the first burst of frames the 5DSR's real potential came through. The image quality was stunning. The tonal gradations were silky smooth and the ultra fine detail provided by the high resolution CMOS was incredible, even on the small screen underwater.

The Aquatica housing is awesome! All the vital controls were in logical places and easily reached without ever taking my eye off of the viewfinder. And speaking of viewfinders, the Aquatica 180 was my choice and worked great giving me a 1.2x magnified view for fast and accurate composition.

After my dives that first day I was eager to download and see what the images really looked like on my computer screen. As I began to import my day's shoot and as that first image loaded and became visible, it was clear that what I'd seen on the LCD underwater was in fact what I got. I had over two hundred of the smoothest toned gradients and highly detailed images that I'd ever taken. This was image quality that rivaled a medium format camera.

Two thumbs up to Canon and to Aquatica for creating such a great pairing. Canon has squeezed a lot out this full frame CMOS sensor and not just megapixels, but a visibly better overall image quality too. This camera is fast enough for most any underwater shooting situation and Aquatica's goal of building rugged top tier housings for professional use is well served with the A5D3/SR model. I'll take two of each please!
