GEAR TESTS: SONY A7S III Underwater Camera Review
Test Footage
James Emery Producer |
The Sony A7S III was the primary rig I used to shoot video during the Digital Shootout 2022.
Previously Sony cameras have not had the best reputation for the best White Balance underwater but now with the latest Sony lineup, this has all changed. The White Balance is so good on this camera that it can accurately take white balances from 100ft or below and still give a fantastic image. Operation of changing white balance couldn't be more effortless, setting the customizable button 'C1' for a one-click, scroll left, execute action. This paired with 4k 120fps makes it the best option for any video shooter.

The low-light champion Sony A7S III mirrorless full-frame camera is an excellent choice for underwater video. When used with the Atomos Ninja V or V+, the camera can simultaneously record high quality 4K video both internally in H.264 or H.265 formats as well as a variety of ProRes options, including ProRes RAW on the Ninja. With dual-native ISO, you can choose the base setting that works best for your lighting situation. When used with the WWL-1B, bayonet mounted in front of the Sony 28-60 F4-5.6 lens, the NA-A7SIII becomes an ultra-portable video platform with exceptional optical performance and flexibility. With the latest generation of the A7 lineup, Sony has improved the camera's ability to capture a custom white balance underwater delivering even better color results.
